The Facebook Timeline Bonnie hates the timeline and already has the instructions on how to turn it off once it is forced on her by facebook. Sanj gives us his opinion on the timeline and he loves it. Joomla Sanj tells us the difference between Wordpress and Joomla. Wordpress is a blog that can do other stuff... Joomla is other stuff and also a blog. He says that once you get the hang of it Joomla is easy to use. SOPA, PIPA, Bill C-11, ACTA James says we will just keep going with the internet no matter what they try to do with all this legislation. Sanj says that online gambling got shut down by the government but they found safe havens to operate out of. Andrew says they got shut down anyway when government seized the urls. Brasil makes email after hours a no no Brasil is passing laws making it more difficult for companies to send email to workers after hours. If the company provides a Blackberry or smart phone to workers and sends them an email after hours they must pay overtime. Deutch Telecom is cutting back on after hours communication... VW is cutting off after hours email completely. Ian says it will affect productivity if their competitors don't change their policies as well. He doesn't think it will last. Ian brings up the point that SMS is the most effective means of communication. Amazon is considering competing directly with Netflix The already have Amazon Prime which gives you free shipping and free movies if you are a member. Ian says nobody is going to movies anymore... A Vancouver movie theatre wanted to serve beer but if they got a liquor license they wouldn't be allowed to show movies... go figure. We remember doing a few episodes of The Bunker Project at Studio 604 when the J-Lounge didn't work out for us. We recorded a couple episodes in Andrew's apartment before moving onto the St. Regis bar while we waited for the Bunker Bar to be renovated and renamed The Den. The Cocktail Maven introduced Bob to The Dark and Stormy Night drink at that show. We talk about why we love doing the show at The Den. Bob complains that Andrew is way behind on the fireball shots. But it only reveals the other products that the models are wearing underneath (underwear). Bob still thinks 3D is a big scam. Astrid liked Avatar... but not all movies in 3D. We talk about augmented reality glasses that gives you a heads up display and can see all sorts of cool things... you can bring up your facebook profile, see local businesses as you walk through the city. Astrid said don't use the glasses while your driving. Bob said you can if they make you drive better. Andrew asks Bonnie if she likes the new Twitter look. We talk about twiter and their lofty goals. Bob talks about Google + Andrew says he read that Twitter borrowed heavily from China's version of Twitter with the new upgrades. Twitter has a new "made for you" feature... which is copying G+ sparks. Bonnie said if it didn't work for Google... it will still be a loser! Bob says he has researched all the Mavens online and he knows all the dirt. Astrid is wondering how Bob is liking Google + and if they failed with G+ as a competitor to facebook. Bob says Google + is beating facebook in adoption rate. But it is growing faster than facebook did initially because facebook paved the way and everyone knows the value of social network sites. Bob believes Linked In will step up and get into the game more. Astrid talks about the difference between North America and Europe as far as Social Media is concerned. Andrew brings up the ultra capacitor which can charge in seconds. Ian says the patents get bought up and don't ever see the light of day. Ian says the reason the cars don't come out is because people are afraid of change and don't want to buy into the technology. Ian gets into Linked In... He has been embracing the platform and is kicking butt. He took a course from Lewis Howes and is building a solid Linked In profile by following Lewis Howes advice. Ian mentions Slide Share and how you can embed it into Linked In and differentiate your profile. Ian says that maximizing each section of your Linked In profile needs to be optimized. You have to make sure it is legible need to continue to optimize the page. Ian talks about the free App Sumo video which promotes the full course. He says that the videos are so full of information that your brain will melt. Ian has noticed a big improvement in the number of people viewing his profile for the targeted topics. James doesn't like the new Linked In app. You can't use bump in Linked In anymore. Margaret likes that you own your contact list in Linked In and export it to excel or outlook. Ian talks about strategies on how to create a targeted list using Linked In. We talk about iOS vs Android... Kurt says RIM will be absorbed by another company soon... James says Apple will buy RIM just for the patents. A great conversation about flash... Bob brings up editable Google Maps... which allows you to edit the maps to add landmarks and stuff. Bob added a bunch of hiking trails that don't exist. And they were approved! Bob reads a twitter post that Bonnie made and asks what does space dot space mean? Ian explains the difference between a ponzi scheme, pyramid scheme, affiliate, mlm, and more... Kurt says there are a lot of people involved and many of the companies are fortune 500. Andrew says a great salesperson fills needs. And the problem is a lot of times an MLM isn't filling needs but instead is selling an opportunity and leveraging a relationship with an expectation tied to the transaction ??? Does that make any sense? Ian brings up "straight line selling" Using tonality and scripting of the pitch. He convinced people to buy and trained 24000 people how to do this. He joins us from a hotel room in Sun Peaks, BC. He is doing a presentation there. Bob says Todd should break open the mini bar... Doug talks about his company breaking into video and wanted to bring the technology big corporations use and bring it to the masses. They developed a product for delivering video via email, video broadcasting, video conferencing, video subscriptions and more. Producing a video is apparently made easy... Kurt asks a few questions and Bob brings up an example of another company doing a similar thing. Doug explains how they have templates that make it easy to create. Ian wants to know the cost... Doug explains how the business works. More questions from the hat maven... and Ian and Bob all ask questions. Bob and Ian wants to know if it will integrate with Mail Chimp, Aweber or iContact. Doug says yes... but they also have their own system. Doug says they are operating in 120 countries. Bonnie asks what the open rate is... apparently it is 84%. Which is huge... Doug says that the reason is the system is not designed for mass videosends but for personal messages. So people are using the system to send video messages to friends and family primarily. Doug talks about the video conferencing service. Kurt has some good points. Doug talks about the future of video... 90% of internet content will be video soon (2014) according to Cisco? Andrew says you don't have to buy a video camera anymore because everyone with a smart phone will have an HD video camera in their pocket. Bonnie asks if the video starts automatically... Kurt says his inappropriate videos are always auto playing at just the wrong time. Doug says the videos don't auto play. Kurt talks about google juice issues... because google doesn't scan video and audio content for keywords / search terms. Bob says wait a minute... this is email video so they don't scan emails... Ken is the only person in our Google Plus hangout this week to start off the show. But not for long... our buddy from Mexico is here on the show! James is in the house with his Human to Cat App... He can speak to the phone and it will translate it to "Cat". Anil is here but has to leave to meet a girl... everyone makes a joke and offers advice. Ken likes to drink Smithwicks... a gaggle of Smithwicks. Ken is joining us from his office. Bonnie and Astrid join us on the hangout for this week. Bob asks our Mexican buddy what he is drinking and it turns out it is H2O... The German Maven is here to listen to us... Ian mentions a rubber sidewalk for people who get kicked out bars they actually bounce! Steve Jobs had approached dropbox but they turned them down. Kind of like Groupon turning down 8 Billion from Google... oops. We talk about RIM offering $100 worth apps for free as a result of the service being down for a few days. BBM'ers apparently sounds dirty. RIM is rebranding the QNX OS and calling it BBX. A few Windows Mobile and RIM jokes fly by... Sony wants to break up with Erickson... Sony Erickson may be going down but what is going to happen to all the patents. Who gets what? James believes it is a good idea for Sony to split from Erickson. Andrew brings up the coolest Sony Phone... the Sony Zuma. Astrid said excuse me... she burped I guess! ;) Ian gives us his review on iOS 5 and the iCloud. Ian has 3 Macs and an iPhone. Ian gives us a run down on his computer industry past. Margaret loves MAC but uses PC for work. Ian says UNIX is the best OS in the world. The Kernal of iOS is UNIX... and LINUX is a cheap version of UNIX. Bonnie said Siri will let you win if you speak nicely to her. Ken has face recognition already on his ASUS computer. We discuss the iCloud music service which will upgrade and legitimize your collection. James brings up the news stand - on iOS 5. Ian likes the integrated facebook and twitter in iOS 5. Bonnie doesn't like cross posting. James has an old tool... apparently. The Camera in the iPhone 4s has an 8MP Camera and records in 1080p HD video. Bob says it makes no difference about the hardware... you still need to know how to take a good shot. Margaret said e-readers are going down... Andrew and James disagree. Andrew says e-readers will stick around because reading on a tablet is hard on the eyes and you can't read on an iPad or Android Tab in direct sunlight. Bob says who cares about books... listen to podcasts and audible books. Andrew listens to podcasts and books too but loves his Kobo. Bonnie is Tweeting... Bonnie asks Margaret how she could be at the Bunker Project and Tweeting something at the same time. Andrew asks if anyone uses Buffer App. Ken used it but only for the automatic quotes... Andrew asks if he is putting videos up elsewhere... he likes youtube and daily motion but is not using anything else. He uses Livestream as well and is putting some live action online. Patrick brings up the f8 facebook keynote... and we tell him to listen to podcast episode number 59 of the Bunker Project. He likes livestream because Mark Zuckerberg used it for the f8 broadcast. Bob asks if he can ask a racially sensitive question... it wasn't racist at all... listen to the show to see what he asks! Bonnie wants to know what it has to do with Social Media... Bob asks people how many people have set up the facebook timeline yet? He says he gamed his facebook wall by putting a custom image at the top. We touch on the status ticker bar... Craig Griffiths from down under joins the google hangout. But unfortunately we can't get his audio to work on the hangout. Bonnie neither likes the ticker bar or dislikes it. Arik says he doesn't dislike any of the changes. What he dislikes is that they put all the changes through all at once. He believes it is a very bad move to drop the changes on everybody. Margaret says facebook has to be "loser friendly"... so that anybody can figure it out and right now it is not. Bob and Andrew likes the Timeline... Bonnie doesn't like it all. She uses facebook for business so she interested in the here and now... not the past. Maryln brings up a good point about someone she knew who got a degree at McGill and then had to spend the whole summer trying to get his friends to untag or remove all the compromising pictures that were posted on facebook so he could get a job... So for that reason she doesn't like the Facebook Timeline... Andrew says you can change your settings in facebook to prevent people from tagging you and putting the pictures on your timeline. Arik says it is not a facebook problem, it is an online problem. Because the same thing can happen on flickr or Hi5 or whatever. Bob says you have to understand that anything that you (or your friends) put on the the internet is public. He is teaching his kids about this... Astrid doesn't understand why people forget about the etiquette that they have face to face when they are online. Leo Laporte says he is 100% transparent online and doesn't filter anything so he is careful what he puts up. Marilyn brought up a good point about regular people are now having to deal with the implications of celebrity which is a foreign concept to most of us. Bonnie asks if Facebook should have an obligation to educate users about the consequences of using their service? Arik says no... Bonnie says that facebook should have to disclose when they make changes in order to protect privacy, etc. Arik says facebook doesn't owe anybody anything. They created a platform for people to be social free of charge. And they are not a government organization so they should be able to what they want. Andrew brings up the fact that facebook has been forced to change due to government regulations all around the world. Arik says always remember when your on facebook your in their house and they make the rules... don't put your home on the web on someone else's platform. Next... a good talk about putting all your eggs in one basket... being careful which eggs you put in the baskets... who's fertilizing your eggs... and be safe. Bob says don't put anything up that you wouldn't want your Mother to see. Bob said he isn't embarrassed by being carried around by giant, super strong women at a party. The Subscribe Button: Arik says it is too complicated... why call it subscribe when it is the same as the like button on a fan page. Small business owners learn how easy it is to get started on their own. Web design... Social Media... Mobile Sites... Bob learned a little more about SEO at the seminar... especially tagging images. Hat Maven (Kurt) wants to talk about the other side of the coin... Sometimes keywords are not always obvious... Bob says Wix.com is great for small businesses to get started if they don’t have a big budget to hire a developer and possibly in the future if their business expands they could go to a professional developer. Andrew agrees... he says that Wix.com is great for the business owner that is hands on and the professional developer is a better option for a bigger organization that doesn’t have a staff member who can handle the website... Maryln says a lot of SMB owners are “stuck on start” and they don’t feel confident to deal with a professional because they don’t understand the language and they are not empowered enough to do it themselves. Kurt says they are dealing with bad designers if that is the case. He explains how the industry has changed over the years. Arik says the beauty of creating a website helps you to focus on what is important in your business. A website is similar to a business plan... and by coming up with the content and design of your website you are forced to focus. Astrid asks how to discern the difference between a true professional and someone who does not know what they are they doing. Ian brings up a good point about best use of your time... he hired someone for his website because he needs to spend his time selling. Bob talks about integrity and personality... he uses a good analogy to make a point about how the client doesn’t always know what they really need. Ian believes starting with a free model like Wix.com is a great first step with your first website. You’ll learn a lot about the process. Podproducer freezes during the opening theme but we decide to keep going anyway. Andrew is back from France with a stop in London and he actually said... “I saw London, I saw France, I saw someones underpants!”... and it’s true he did see all those things. And he also found “The Place” but is forbidon to reveal the location. There’s a place in France where the Ladies don’t wear pants... And there’s a hole in the wall where the men can see it all. Andrew talks a little bit about his trip to France and the illegal tomatos... which will be a better topic for the Health Empowerment News podcast. Germans dislike the facebook like button and one district is banning the like button due to violation of privacy laws. The big issue is that all the data is being mined and sent back to an American company. The German government isn’t coming after facebook over the use of the like button... they are going after the businesses that use it on their sites... with big fines. Bob wants to talk games... and gets confused over who is who and who is excited about Angry Birds.... Turns out it is Bonnie. Bob says Google + shouldn’t be monetizing the experience and makes a long statement about the problems with Google + games... The Game Maven says there is soooo much wrong with that statement... and gives us his commentary about Google + games. James says that Texas Holdem is his favourite game on Google +. We talk about farmville and cityville and whether they are coming to Google + or not. James is wearing a Google shirt he won at a converence. Andrew is wearing a Wix.com shirt... Bob likes his Wix.com shirts because they feel fuzzy. Andrew mentions his Klout score plummeted while on vacation... James says Klout and Empire Avenue are games but they aren’t fun. James mentions that he is burned out on Google + but Bonnie says she is just getting started with G+. Will people leave facebook for G+? Next topic is Google’s purchase of Motorola What will Motorola’s new phones be called? Googorola? Why buy Motorola? Patents, Patents, Patents! and to have a Gold Standard Android Phone. Andrew talks about the difference between a pure Android phone like the Nexus One or Nexus S and a manufacturer with it’s own overlay. HTC Sense and Motorola’s Motoblur are examples of this. James brings up the point about the different versions of Android making it complicated. Andrew says Apple has the same problem to a certain extent. We get into the death of Web OS... and some talk about HP printers... Bob wants regenerating paper... Arik says not to forget about the importance of rolling papers. Satomi asks a question about the Motorola purchase and Skype. Arik brings up credit card phones or network billing for purchases. Charge purchases to your cell bill using your smart phone. Bonnie asks if there is an idiot app? James asks us to stop using the word “gamification” He says the Health Care System shouldn’t be gamified which was pretty funny. And it is Podcasting 101 Q & A time! Bunker Project Show Notes: Podcasting 101 Q & A: Katherine asks how to attach show notes and album art (logo) to a podcast. She wants to specifically how you get that information onto an MP3 file so it shows up while people are listening. Bob brings up the appropriate file size images for smart phones, ipods and ipads or tablets. Andrew recommends MP3 Tag for PC users and ID3 Editor for MAC users. MP3 Tag is FREE and ID Editor is $15 to purchase. Andrew and Bob discuss how to use the software. ID3 editor also allows you to put the whole show notes onto the mp3 file using the lyrics tag. Katherine has another question: Do these tags work for SEO? Google will be scanning audio and video content on the internet and therefore in the future (2 or 3 months maybe) and at that point having a podcast will be great for SEO because the audio content will be searchable. For now tagging the audio file has a similar affect on SEO as tagging an image. Andrew brings up a point about SEO focussing on Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc, etc. But people forget that iTunes is also a search engine and people go there because it is a directory of content where people search for content using search terms just like in a google search. Satomi has a question about the connection between Libsyn and Feedburner? Bob talks about what Libsyn and Feedburner do Andrew brings up a point about Feedburner. Another question: How long should your podcast be? Bob brings up the average commute time being around 40 minutes. Andrew makes a point about quality vs qauntity. Don’t try and fill the show with poor content just to make your usual time. It is better to do a 30 min show filled with great content then 45 minutes with the last 15 minutes being filler content... We talk about Allan Middletons University of Iowa, Lancaster study on podcasting. We recorded a Bunker Project Special Report episode and had a great conversation with Allan about his study! We take another question from Lisa... How do you make money with podcasting or is it just a branding opportunity for your business? We discuss these methods for monetizing your podcast: 1.Charge for your show - Premium show only available to paid subscribers. 2.Make $$$ with ads placed in your show or on your blog or website where show is located. 3.Sell products or services on your show. 4.Get a sponsor - The Bunker Project has a great sponsor - Wix.com 5.Build a Community and then sell access to webinars, digital products or membership sites. 6.Give away a portion of episodes for free and charge for the rest. 7.Affiliate Marketing - Link to products using your affiliate code or keyword (disclosure is required). 8.Bluberry Ad network for podcasters - It is difficult to advertisers interested in a podcast with a small audience. But by joining a podcast network you can attract advertisers who are interested in adverising to people interested specifically in your topic. The advertiser pays for the pooled audience and everyone gets a share. Bob brings up the fact taht a lot of pocasts fail due to the fact that money is the primary motivator for doing the show. You must be passionate about the topic in order for it to succeed. We get into the topic by stating how important it is to have passion for the topic in order to prevent a common condition known as podfading. We use the divorce lawyer that does a podcast on how to stay happily married as an example. Andrew says that if you business isn't your passion and is just a job or a way to pay the bills you can still podcast about your passion. Podcast about what really interests you and make your business the primary sponsor. If your a real estate agent but your passion is collecting classic cars... podcast about classic cars brought to you by YOU the realtor, call me when your ready to sell your house. Bob asks Andrew to explain what is a podcast? A podcast is any media file (audio, video, slide show, etc) syndicated over an RSS feed. RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. The RSS feed is the key... it's not a podcast with out the RSS feed. Bob talks about places you can listen to podcasts: iTunes, Android Apps, Blackberry Podcast App, Zune and many more. Bob mentions one of his favorite podcasts is a crazy show that teaches you how to do weird things. The latest episode explained how to shrink a human head... Andrew said the best podcasts are Super Niche... General topic podcasts don't generally get a big following. If you have a super niche podcast and only have a few hundred listeners that are interested in exactly what you are looking for you have nailed down a good market for your business. Bob brings up the guy that is totally into pop... and gets people excited about pop because he so passionate about the subject. Andrew mentions that you can use a podcast as a training manual for your staff or as a resource for your customers. A good example is the dentist that uses podcasting to record detailed descriptions on each procedure. Instead of spending countless phone calls explaining the procedure over an over again to clients he can direct them to that particular podcast episode. Bob asks Andrew how much money you need to get started in Podcasting? Assuming you already have the most expensive part of the podcasting equation which is a computer than all you really need is a half decent microphone. Andrew shows the audience a headset boom mic which plugs in to the USB port on your computer. Bob says that it is better to start out cheap because you may not stick with podcasting for whatever reason. Once you know podcasting works for you get yourself some more expensive gear. Bob recommends London Drugs because of their return policy. And he also stresses that it is very important to pick comfortable headphones because they will be on your head for a long time so comfort really makes a difference. Bob explains the difference between Condenser mics and Dynamic mics. Condenser mics pick up all the audio in the environment. Dynamic mics pick up audio close to the mic. A dynamic microphone is less sensitive except in the sweet spot about an inch from the mic. If you do research online everybody is saying that condenser microphones are the best. Studio Quality microphones. But if you have a condenser mic you need to treat your room that you are using as a studio to keep out unwanted audio. We didn't get into Beer Pairing last episode because we all had too much to say about Google + so we are going to do it now to start off episode 50! But before we do Andrew wants to bring up something he found to be disgusting... Twisted_Majic sent out a tweet about Donut Burgers at the Calgary Stampede! Andrew wants to know if it is a paddy between two donuts or donut in a bun. Big digression on the Calgary Stampede... Maple Glaze donut with a big square beef paddy in between... Twisted_Majic says it would be great with a black beer.... the donut burger was amazing and Stampede was awesome. Mennonites vs Hederites vs Bunkerites... Now into the food tasting / black beer pairing. Ragin Cagin Beef Jerky and Black Forest Fudge... Wow Satomi is doing shots of Tequilla... no way!!!! Andrew starts to give some background about previous black beer pairings in previous shows... but he's too late... Bob is into the food and loving it! Bob loves the Black Forest Fudge... he said the nuts taste like marsh mellows becuase of all the sugar. Andrew likes the Ragin Cagin Beef Jerky... Everybody else starts getting into the taste test. Hat Maven says he is very excited about Netflix adding Eddie Murphy RAW to the roster. Bob wants to bring in Craig from Craigslist to the show. Schmelt Maven says if you go to Craigslist in the top right corner of the page you can watch the Craigslist Movie... Schmelt Maven says his friend went to the Craigslist office in San Fran and it is just an apartment and Craig is just a regular guy... The Black Beer has arrived and Bob is talking about some crazy stuff... Andrew says it appears that Bob has had one Black Beer too many... 12 minutes into the show and we haven't said a thing. Andrew said that the Ragin Cagin goes very, very well with black beer... Not so sure about the Black Forest Fudge... Bob likes the Black Forest Fudge with Black Beer. Hat Maven couldn't pull himself away from the presentation. He said it knocked his socks off and he can't wait... the biggest change in computing we've seen in years... coming soon. Bob says it is awesome for 90 % of the market but he pros are going to abandon it... Bob says that Final Cut 10 is basically Final Cut 10 is basically iMovie plus... Andrew asks what Twisted_Majic is smoking... He got it from Smoke Envy... Bob says the S-word which was surgically altered to not sound like the S-word. Twisted_Majic says the fake cigarette he is smoking has no nicotine because it is not legal to have nicotine cartridges in Canada yet. It really looks like a real cigarette...
